There are two culminating experience options; thesis or applied research project.  Both of these options are customized to the needs and interests of students.  This is an opportunity for you to focus on your professional interest and further develop your professional expertise.

Description

Applied Research Project

  • Original analysis (may or may not include original data)
  • Thorough investigation of well-defined recreation, parks and/or tourism (RPT) issue or problem
  • The ARP can take either of the two following forms:
  1. Original research where the final product is a journal manuscript submitted to a peer-reviewed journal.
  2. Project that is useful to the cooperating RPT organization (e.g., program evaluation instrument, new marketing plan, training manual, impact assessment, volunteer management plan, partnership action plan, strategic plan, detailed case study, sustainability report, market analysis).  The final product can be a journal manuscript or a traditional 5-chapter format.

Thesis

  • Original research
  • Written document
  • Collect and analyze original data using qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods.

Requirements (General)

  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Continuous enrollment
  • Approved ATC (Submitted to graduate division 2-3 semesters before graduation)
  • Establish a Culminating Experience Committee

Requirements (CE specific)

Applied Research Project

  • Take RPT 895
  • Delivery of bound and PDF copies of ARP to Department, and CEC Chair

Thesis

  • Take RPT 898
  • One or more additional research methods class (statistics, qualitative research methods, etc.)
  • Must follow university format and submittal requirements
  • Delivery of bound  and PDF copies of thesis to Department,  CEC Chair, and Graduate Division

Culminating Experience Committee (CEC)

Applied Research Project

  • 2 RPT Department faculty members
  • 1 RPT organizational employee if working with an organization or a third academic member if original research

Thesis

  • 3 members
  • 2 or more RPT Department faculty members
  • Possibly 1 member who is a specialist in the focus of the thesis

Strong Suggestions

Applied Research Project

  • One or more additional research methods class (statistics, qualitative research methods, etc.)
  • The cooperating organization should be in the Bay Area.
  • Presentation of findings at conference

Thesis

  • Presentation of findings at conference
